I am a clinical psychologist with a background in providing, teaching and supervising psychotherapy.
Over the years, I have gradually expanded my understanding and practice of therapy from the prevailing medical/psychiatric/psychological model of "curing" "psychopathologies" to encompass exploration and intervention across the entire breadth of what I term "The Four Psychologies": PSY1.0 Preventive, PSY2.0 Curative, PSY3.0 Positive and PSY4.0 Transcendent.
Whereas the goal of Psychologies 1.0 and 2.0 is Wellness, the goal of Psychology 3.0 is Well Being and that of Psychology 4.0 is exploring "the farther reaches of human nature," as Abraham Maslow, co-parent of transpersonal psychology (along with Roberto Assagioli, whose "psychosynthesis" emerged in the early 1900s as an alternative to psychoanalysis) termed higher consciousness states.
My 2022 book "How to Stop Thinking and Not Get Eaten By A Bear: The New Cognitive Behavioral Mind Training" is the conceptual culmination of my work with clients wishing help with widely varying challenges and goals spanning the entire Four Psychologies. My goal in conducting therapy, teaching and writing is to open clients', students' and readers' minds (as well as my own, as we are all, always, co-evolving, and every act is an act of self-discovery) to aspects of psychology, both Western and Eastern, that are ignored by modern, so-called "scientific" psychology, to our detriment. I say this because, in effect, mainstream psychology is unfortunately plagued by "scientism" which ‘‘… goes beyond the actual findings of science to deny that other approaches to knowledge are valid and other truths true.’’ (Smith, 1976, pp. 16-17)
By integrating mainstream cognitive behavioral theory and technique with knowledge and skills drawn from the fields of consciousness studies, meditation, mindfulness, yoga, "Atma Vichara" (Self-Enquiry in the tradition of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi), kundalini awakening, out of body experiences, near death experiences and shared death experiences, I aim to re-invigorate the fields of psychology and psychotherapy by sharing with readers, both lay and professional, what I and other transpersonal psychologists and consciousness explorers have learned that may be of use to others on the path "From Wellness to Well Being and Beyond."
