After years of researching his grandfather Leonard Harper’s life story and works the author penned his first book Rhythm For Sale. Because of the books contents and writing style Mr. Reid was able to not only acquire numerous writing awards but have his grandfather finally get his rightful place on the History of Entertainment Map. The City of New York named a street after Leonard Harper and just recently he was inducted into the prestigious Tap Dance Hall of Fame. Rhythm For Sale the book garnered the NAACP Historian Award and was the CHANTICLEER Grand Prize Journey best book awards. Rhythm For Sale is remarkably still popular and alive on the radio years after he wrote it. Writer’s Digest review: What a valentine it is Rhythm For Sale: With compelling apt photos, an extensive bibliography, and reference list and deeply researched, well-organized chapters he (Grant) does his grandfather justice.
Grant’s second book is titled Harlem Bible- In The Beginning and it’s his personal memoir detailing his youth growing up in Harlem and then moving to the suburbs of Teaneck, New Jersey. He was bussed at an early age from Harlem to a public school in a white Jewish neighborhood and in Teaneck was part of the 6th grade racial integration process. His memory and recollection to the details of his past are out of this world and his sense of humor had readers falling out of their seats. The contents of Harlem Bible brought about the naming of a New york City street after Grant’s political activist grandmother Fannie Pennington. Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Library’s book review: Harlem’s best kept secrets! Reid’s spunky account of his young life throughout sixties Harlem is an immensely enjoyable read. The detailed descriptions of characters, places and situations which he encountered make his story that much more real. It is a colorful story of family, community and the inevitably complex social constructs which have risen from the history of America. Everyone knows something about Harlem, but this book will make you see the city with brand new eyes!
