I’m an author of contemporary fiction, historical fiction and non-fiction. My books have been published in Australia, New Zealand, USA and Europe.
I’m also an English teacher and I’ve been lucky enough to introduce the love of language to many very talented students around the world.
One of my first non-fiction books, Who The Hell Is Pansy O’Hara?, was about the stories behind great novels - what it was that inspired the authors to write those books. As I researched, I realised most writers were once in careers and roles that many of us inhabit. But they also had a great grasp of language and an urge to tell a wonderful story.
I was an English teacher, so I guess that planted the seed of an idea that I should give it a go.
Sydney, Australia, is where I was born and raised, but prior to my reinvention as a writer (which had something to do with a friendly argument with my husband!), I held the position of Head of English at Eaton House The Manor in London’s Clapham Common. I also taught English and Drama for eight years at a selective high school in Sydney, and for five years at a private girls’ college in Canberra.
Whether I’ve been at home, living and working in another country, or travelling for the sake of adventure, I have never spent a single day without a book by my side. This meant slipping from the act of reading into the act of writing didn't actually seem that much of a change.
“I do get a little bit lost in the research and writing process, but now I couldn’t actually imagine life without it. The characters are fascinating to live with - so much so that sometimes it can be difficult to finally admit a book is finished!”
I’ve long been a fan of great historical fiction writers such as Hilary Mantel, but I also spend quality time with books by authors from other genres, such as Margaret Atwood, Kate Atkinson, Tim Winton, Ian McEwan, Jane Austen, John Irving and E. Annie Proulx.
When I’m not writing, I enjoy keeping fit and love to travel. I live with my husband in Canberra and enjoy spending time with our two sons and our very lively dog.
