MARTHA VOORHEES’ journey through life has taken her in several different directions. Among many other things, she’s been a dancer, a musician, a photographer, and a painter. She’s tried skydiving, scuba diving, archery, and climbing. Never afraid to pull her weight, she even tried her hand as a bodybuilder. Growing up on a farm, Martha learned to drive trucks, tractors, and combine harvesters. She can even fly a plane! In her thirties, Martha attended college in Pennsylvania. During this time, she raised tons of food for the hungry and homeless, and money to feed the animals during Hurricane Katrina. While she was at college, Martha’s dad disappeared: a plot twist she never saw coming. She took a leave from college to return home, run the family farm in Lehigh County, and began raising horses. Despite all the twists and turns, one thing has been present throughout Martha’s life: animals. In particular, her love of Labradors, who have been her constant companions. The names of Martha’s dogs are engraved on her heart: Buffy, Tasha, Thor and Xena, Herakles and Samson, and Calypso. Providing companionship, solace, and a never-ending source of joy, Martha has learned much from her canine soul mates. For years, she’s been amazed by their ability to keep going, their unconditional love and fearlessness in the face of change. Convinced that everyone should live life like a labrador, Martha knew she had to share this message. A lover of books and comics since childhood, she decided to write her life story. Unsurprisingly, she decided to split it into several chapters! From farm girl to dancer, college student, to dog trainer and business owner, Martha hopes her tale will help many others. And she hopes it inspires them to be fearless in their own lives. These days, Martha lives in Bucks County, PA, with her pilot partner and English Labrador, Calypso.
