Smith is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he studied nuclear engineering and European history before being commissioned as a military intelligence officer. He spent much of his career in the Army serving overseas, including deployments on peacekeeping missions to Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia. He currently lives in Nashville, Tennessee, with his wife Heather and a small platoon of cats.
