This book review is near and dear to my heart. Not only is my dad, Wayne Pilgreen, in my opinion, a hero in On Full Automatic: Surviving 13 Months in Vietnam, but I adore the author, Bill Taylor. He has recently become a dear friend of mine; it's crazy how you can just know someone as if you've known them your entire life.
Bill Taylor took me to Vietnam through this book, which has given me an understanding like never before of the trauma of war - especially those battles that will forever remain in the minds (probably daily) of those who fought for our freedoms. My mouth dropped almost every page of this book, especially during the Operation of Cochise, since that was a battle that my dad played a huge role in right before he left Vietnam. It's a miracle that any of these men made it out alive. I appreciate the way the book was written in that I feel I am in battle alongside of them. The realism in the imagery and conversations is phenomenal, but beware, these men were walking into devastion and death for 13 months, so certainly the language reflects that - it's an ugly business in every way. I'm so proud of you men that defend our freedoms and the freedoms of others. Thank you all for what you have done and what you will continue to do to help us maintain them.
