The BookViral Review:

For readers who enjoyed Infernal Gates from Michael Jack Webb, The Oldest Enemy will be enthusiastically received and prove another outstanding read. A viscerally effective Supernatural thriller he is back doing what he does best. Delivering a novel that is by turns atmospheric, eerie and evocative.

As with Infernal Gates, his narrative is sophisticated. Treating his story’s spiritual overtones with the utmost sincerity whilst exploiting the best-loved tropes of the genre. Readers would be disappointed if his historical references weren’t underpinned by extensive research and he definitely doesn’t let them down. In terms of what he does and doesn’t show, he strikes an equitable balance between the power of suggestion and the satisfaction of a good, in-your-face scare, as he masterfully modulates the dramatic rhythms of a superb plot. The sense of danger continuing to accelerate as David and Lauren are drawn ever deeper into a web of supernatural conspiracy. Together seeking answers to Beth’s death and ultimately finding themselves in and an age-old celestial battle between the forces of light and dark. On this level, Webb’s command of genre technique is masterful as he teases seemingly minor jolts into frissons of terror and readers can be sure that when it comes to the demonic manifestations they are wholly chilling!

A tour de force in the ever-popular supernatural thriller genre Michael Jack Webb again proves a must-read with the Oldest Enemy recommended without reservation.
