A Talisman of Home
Annie M. Ballard, author
A woman who has lost everything has nothing left to lose.
Why not take a chance on the father she’d never met?
Mackie Brown lost her marriage, her pregnancy and then her mother, one after the other. While cleaning out her mother’s tiny apartment, she found information about the father whom she’d never known. With a snapshot, a medallion, some letters, and a tiny ray of hope, Mackie left Boston for a small fishing village in eastern Canada to try to find Eric Johnson.
Mackie tried to blend in, but a small town notices the girl from away, even one who is grieving and shy. Finding Eric wasn’t hard, but he certainly wasn’t the man she’d hoped he would be. Instead of being the hero of her girlhood dreams, Eric was a real man with significant problems, and a host of other family members. Mackie realized she was no longer dealing in make believe. Instead, the simple fact of her existence could add chaos into the lives of real people. What to do?
Desperately alone, feeling adrift in a stormy sea, Mackie struggles to find a safe harbour. When she confronts Eric, tragedy strikes. Can she find it in herself to step up to be a real member of the family?
