Their first stop is the wise seacorn Aria, who confirms the shell is real and warns them of the bumpy journey ahead of them. The shell is guarded by a discerning octopus, and the ocean is churning with dangerous traps—including a deadly whirlpool and a sticky seaweed forest. Both Lexa and Livi have their share of trouble along the way, but their camaraderie never wanes, leading to their foreseeable success. Dunsche throws in a twist when it comes time to make their wish, however, giving the story a welcome surprise ending.

I bought this book to read with my three children. It has lovely lessons in it about the importance of the sibling bond, having courage, and thinking about others and not just yourself. The illustrations are very cute too. I’ll be reading this many times with my kids.

I was looking for a book for our daily bedtime read with our daughter that is not only drawing her in through cute illustrations but also the message it tells. I enjoyed this tender and heartfelt tale of two mermaid sisters who work to overcome their fears to hunt for the Shell of Magic, a treasure of legend. Together, they plan a journey to accomplish their quest. They start by learning how to ask for help and who to see it from. I found Lexa, the older sister’s guidance, encouragement, and care of her younger sister, Livi, endearing. The mermaid sisters demonstrate what a close sibling relationship can and should be. The sisters learn to value themselves and one another. When my daughter was little, she would have liked this book and the lessons taught in it. Being courageous and young can be tough sometimes, but oh so worth it!
