Dark Secrets is about inter-generational trauma and WWII events. It is set in three different locations: A Scandinavian immigrant community of Astoria, Oregon, Paris, France and southern Sweden. The protagonist, Lena, is the granddaughter of a Swedish immigrant whose nights are often interrupted with screams. She longs to uncover her grandmother's secrets: what mysterious events occurred during her grandmother’s return visit to Sweden on the brink of Hitler’s invasion of Poland in 1939? Lena is an aspiring writer and wins a scholarship to study at the Sorbonne in Paris, but she suffers from a sleep disorder which threatens her studies as well as her budding first romance. When she is called home to Astoria by her dying mother, she knows she must go to Sweden and find out what happened on the family farm in southern Sweden in 1939, what dark secrets haunted her deceased grandmother which led to her tragic demise and trauma which has been passed down to two generations.
