Assessment:
Plot: The plot of this novel is engaging and emotional. However, at times the storyline feels a bit contrived, and this works to take readers out of the otherwise compelling narrative.
Prose: Slabach’s prose is highly descriptive, vivid, and believable. The use of first person makes the narration simultaneously raw, humorous, and emotional.
Originality: At times this novel follows a familiar but enjoyable storyline. And while the ending is not a complete shock, there are pleasant surprises in the gender-role reversal in the Sinclair family and in the resolution of the story.
Character Development: Each of Slabach’s characters has unique strengths and flaws. Even the dynamics between secondary characters are authentic. At times, Susan’s indecisiveness slows down the story, but readers will find themselves indecisive about who to root for in this messy affair.

Degrees of Love by Lisa Slabach is her debut novel, but I would have never guessed that. I was immediately hooked by the story, and I couldn’t stop swiping frantically at my Kindle to see how the story unfolded. --Samantha March for Readers' Favorite
Debut author Lisa Slabach writes an engaging and thought-provoking novel that explores the depths of family, love, marriage and second chances. Degrees of Love will take readers on an emotional journey as we watch Susan explore the different roles in her life, working to discover what it is she truly wants most.
On paper, Susan Sinclair seems to have everything. What more could she want? She has the large house, fancy car, husband and two kids. But as it turns out, looks can be deceiving. Behind closed doors Susan is unhappy. Her marriage is a farce; she and her husband have drifted apart, despite Matt’s insistence that everything is status quo. When she meets someone else, she must ask herself if she is willing to risk it all for a second chance at love and happiness … even if it means potentially losing her children.
