Lannie Stabile has created a brilliant and sometimes oddly humorous collection of poetry for survivors. Drenched in the lore of Greek mythology, and gallows humor, the poems sent me back for a review of the ancient Greek tales of a universe led by Zeus, a god of dubious character to say the least. Peppering her poems with both old and new references, Stabile sent me to Google to check out the meanings. From Calisto to Anything Goes to Ludacris, we read a masterful skewering of Zeus and the patriarchy he embodies. Men who use women. Men who abuse women. From the poem that highlights the eighteen deities Zeus had his way with to the last poetic letter penned to him in the collection, the reader is struck by the powerful lightning that "keeps a girl awake for twenty years, wondering what it is about her body that calls to the four winds."
