Hope, Love, and other lies
Suj Ahmed, author
This anthology of eleven short stories set in and around children’s homes reflect some of the author’s experiences in three children’s homes from the age of ten till seventeen, and some stories are reflections on the child sexual abuse cases in Rochdale and Rotherham. The stories are raw, dark, and disturbing. Most of the stories are interlinked, with characters appearing in more than one story at different stages of their lives.
The uncompromising style and content portray characters who could be described as ‘left behind’ of the ‘left behind’. Living in an unseen parallel world where the children’s ‘working class’ voices are unheard and their traumas and needs ignored. Open to abuse and self-abuse, desperate for love, which is the rarest commodity in a children’s home. Stories are written in broken syntax to explore broken lives.
