★★★★ "5 short stories middle schoolers love. Kid Beowulf continues to pack its saga with adventure. Readers will slay this graphic novel with its fast-paced, action-filled hazardous tale. Graphics flow and lead readers through the story with ease. The colors are vibrant and enjoyable to view. Some gore, some violence, but Middle Grade worthy!"
★★★★★ Kid Beowulf - Songs and Sagas is the next book in the Kid Beowulf series. This time, it is filled with short stories that take place in between the main Kid Beowulf books - from the tale of how the Dragon lost his eye to Beowulf and Boudica's friendship and travels, and everything in between. Songs and Sagas covers all the side quests that didn't make it to the main stories. As with the remainder of the Kid Beowulf books, Songs and Sagas is a colourful graphic novel, drawn on the classic Western style that hearkens back to Asterix and Tintin (rather than the current popular Manga-style illustration). It's witty and clever and full of historical detail. My kiddo loves the Kid Beowulf, and this one was no exception.~Many thanks to Alexis Fajardo and NetGalley for providing an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review~

"Fajardo proves he’s just as talented at short stories as he is with his larger epics. These ‘lost tales' enrich his world-building and give us a chance to get to know his eminently-likable characters a little better.” – Matt Bird, author of “The Secrets of Story: Innovative Tools for Perfecting Your Fiction and Captivating Your Readers” and “The Secrets of Character: Writing Heroes Anyone Will Love”
The latest entry in the Kid Beowulf graphic novel series Songs & Sagas sets sail with Crowdfundr this July as part of their Kids/YA Content Creators Spotlight!
Kid Beowulf, the middle-grade graphic novel series that follows the legendary adventures of twin brothers Beowulf and Grendel across the world of mythology, sets sail with a new crowd-funding adventure this July at Crowdfundr. Four books strong, the new addition Kid Beowulf - Songs & Sagas is a collection of short stories. "These are the stories between the stories" says series creator and cartoonist, Alexis E. Fajardo. "Over the years I've done short stories between the big books that feature fan favorites on side quests and I'm excited to gather them all in one book."
The campaign to fund the 228 page graphic novel runs through July on Crowdfundr as part of their Kids/YA Content Creators Spotlight. Fajardo and his Kid Beowulf series is just one creator among many who have launched their campaign in the month of July. Crowdfundr is working in partnership with innovative kids content creators hailing from online comics communities like: Kids Comics Unite, KidLitGN, GlobalComix, The Storytelling Collective, TTRPG Kids, and Comix Well Spring.
"The timing for this spotlight couldn't be better," Fajardo says. "I planned to crowdfund my next book this year anyway so when I heard about the Crowdfundr spotlight through my contacts at Kids Comics Unite, I jumped at the chance to be a part of it."
2023 marks the 20th anniversary of Kid Beowulf, which Fajardo describes as starting as a black-and-white mini-comic back in 2003. "That little zine turned into a comic book, then a graphic novel, and then an ongoing series. I've run the gamut from self-publishing to traditional publishing and everything in between. It's been fascinating to see how the kids graphic novel market has evolved over those twenty years and rewarding to watch Kid Beowulf evolve with it."
Twenty years and 1500 pages later Songs & Sagas is the sixth title from Fajardo's ongoing series which comprises webcomics, graphic novels, storybooks, and comic strips. To celebrate the milestone Fajardo has opened the archives and is offering some limited edition 20th Anniversary items at the Songs & Sagas crowdfunder including collector's editions of books, character collectibles, and original sketch card art. "The most gratifying part of making comics for twenty years are all the great people I've befriended along the way. Colleagues became friends as do the readers and fans. Sometimes you even meet a talented new cartoonist who you inspired from a school talk you did years ago. That's mind blowing…in the best kind of way."
