Finished this book on Kindle in one sitting and loved it. I felt like I was there, riding along with the author through harrowing experiences in an underreported & tragic period in the troubled history of one of America’s nearest yet most neglected neighbors. The author tackles complex social and political issues through raw, insightful anecdotes and a delicate touch, without lecturing, pandering or virtue-signaling. Woven throughout and rising above the abjection and depravity of the setting are inspiring themes of hope, service, family and spirituality. Loved the inclusion of personal photos which really brought the stories home. I’ve only just finished and have already sent a paperback to a friend for Christmas.

Filled with heart-warming and daring compassion, this book does not shy away from the harsh realities facing the young boys living on the streets in Haiti. It is a fascinating portrayal seen from the eyes of an American woman, Charlotte, who arrives on the island to lead a non-profit organization. Instead of ignoring the boys begging hands as she is told, she slowly gets to know them. The touching humanity shown by Charlotte is in stark contrast to the political uproar and social injustices that take place around them. It was a beautiful memoir and a read that is sure to stay in my heart forever.
