Mark’s parents drink too much and often forget him. He struggles to deal with the harsh reality of his family life. Mark escapes the chaos of his home by spending time alone in nearby woods. He has hidden a canvas bag close to his house. It contains items necessary for staying in the woods.
Mark gets older and can’t control his anger. He makes some bad decisions. Mark then works hard to overcome his mistakes. He refuses to give up on himself.
After discovering he his ability to write, Mark’s life is changed forever.
The book is very emotional; it is well written, and you actually feel like you're going through the emotional turmoil yourself. All families have dysfunction; some talk about it and some don't. Mark, the main character, lived through dysfunction no one should deal with, and yet somehow managed to survive through it. Very thought provoking. Good read.
This story is told so well that I was riveted to each page. I could visualize every scene unfolding through this writer's amazing words. A great book for discussions in family groups, and good for others who may have gone through a dysfunctional childhood and felt as if they were the only one.
I was captivated from the very first page of the book. The narrative progresses at a steady pace in simple grammar. Also, the narrative switches between different periods in the life of the protagonist. This added a layer of intrigue to the story.
I love the depth of detail provided by the author. It made the story come alive.
The story is a haunting tale that addresses themes related to Identity and Love and Family Relationships. It is a slow build which may drag for some readers. Those who enjoy Historical Fiction and Coming of Age stories should enjoy My Canvas Bag.
