Old Whiskers Escapes!
Old Whiskers' Escape tells the true story of President Benjamin Harrison's pet goat that lived on the White House grounds. The goat often was spotted taking the president's grandchildren on wagon rides on the lawn but one day escaped with Grandson Baby McKee in tow. President Harrison, upon discovering the goat was missing, went running down Pennsylvania Avenue in hot pursuit, his top hat in one hand and cane in the other. The story, delightful in its own right, will offer readers surprising insight into Indiana's only president, the popularity of presidential pets at the White House during the 19th Century, and the enduring relationships between grandparents and their grandchildren--regardless of grandpa's station in life.

Andrea Neal

A rollicking children's story that engages the imagination while teaching about an actual historical event. Children will love the suspense as Old Whiskers - with Baby McKee in his wagon - go hurtling toward A GREAT BIG HOLE. Will Grandpa arrive in time to save them from disaster? The author Donna Griffin uses action verbs, alliteration, and onomatopoeia to bring the story to life. The pictures by Indy Star editorial cartoonist Gary Varvel will leave readers of all ages grinning ear to ear. Great history lessons about Indiana's only president can be found at the end of the book and will enrich children's understanding of what presidents do and how they live at the White House.
