Paramour Book I
George Bachman, author
Blondie Simpson lies near death after a violent incident. As her life flashes before her eyes, alternating between past and near-present, she relives the incidents that brought her here, starting a year ago.
Blondie recovers a memory that her mother Ava abused her when she was a child. She reports Ava to the police and gets her arrested. Then she realizes that the memory was false and retracts her accusation. By that time, Ava has lost her career and friends. Her life is ruined and Ava leaves home.
Determined to get Ava back and fix the damage she inadvertently caused, Blondie embarks on a search for her. By combing through online records and tracking down Ava’s old friends and family, Blondie discovers that Ava was born Moneta Jabez. Twenty years ago, Moneta was assaulted, but her family refused to believe her because of their troubled relationship.
Heartbroken, Moneta left home for university. There she was recruited into an underground society of “surfers” who steal, trade, and occupy each other’s memories. These memories are often networked to form a vast secondary world. Shortly afterward, Moneta disappeared, to resurface years later as “Ava.” But now she might have gone back.
Blondie gets accepted into university and finds and infiltrates the same group of surfers by demonstrating she has a talent for surfing, as Moneta did, though she does not tell them who she is.
With the group, she undertakes a series of heists targeting “paramours.” These are industry magnates and spies whose memories contain information worth thousands to the highest bidders. Picking up clues from those memories, Blondie gradually uncovers Moneta’s trail and the mystery behind her disappearances.
Unbeknownst to her, she also draws closer to a secret that could destroy them both.
