In 2000 in South Florida, Maria Alvarez’s mother calls her begging her to return to Bogota, Colombia to reconcile with her dying father. Two years earlier, Maria was kidnapped by terrorist rebels. After her rescue, she learned that her father refused to pay the ransom claiming Maria is married and not his responsibility. Even though this was his way of dealing with the terrorist, the crass statement wounded Maria and her family. She agonizes over her father's dying wish knowing that if she returned to Colombia she not only would forfeit her precious green card but risk being recaptured and killed. Leaving her husband and two young daughters behind, Maria finds a way to return incognito, only to find herself back in harm's way and fighting for her life.
