Setting out to find food in a melting Arctic landscape, Captain Polo finds himself back on the ocean waves in his trusty sailing boat, falling into one crazy adventure after another. Except this time, he is sailing on the secret agenda of a hidden stowaway!
Book 4 in this series of climate change books for kids takes Captain Polo on another rollicking, funny global journey that uncovers ever more important aspects of global warming, and importantly, also the many ways we can all become part of the solution.
The book explores current climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies in different countries. Carefully researched and expert-validated facts interweave with fiction in an action-packed storyline that explores Arctic ice-melt and its implications, the terrifying role of permafrost, the effects of global warming on reindeer herders and the tourism industry in Lapland, the mysterious carbon capture technology being developed in Iceland, the difference between climate and weather, fossil fuels and the emergence of alternative energy technology, the effect of rising sea levels in West Africa, climate activism and many other pertinent subjects.
Last but not least, Captain Polo books always include climate change solutions, and Book 4 in the series is no exception. The book comes with a detailed glossary explaining the main technical terms and concepts used in the book and as heard increasingly frequently in the media. As such it makes for the perfect addition to any library at home or at school, or in the wider community.
How do you teach your young kids about global warming? There are at least two problems. First, it's a scary subject, and Second, there's science involved. As a parent or teacher of young kids, how do you start? The answer? Use Captain Polo!
The Adventures of Captain Polo: Pole to Pole is a great book. It's fun. It's friendly. And it teaches the science of climate change in a way that is easy to understand. As a cartoon polar bear, Captain Polo is a friendly character readers like. He has a boat, a captain's hat, and a sidekick who is a penguin. He also has someone chasing him to make his stories interesting. He travels around the world on his boat, which shows readers how climate change is affecting everyone on Earth. Results on climate change are shown but not in a scary way. There are no wildfires burning up homes. There are no storms killing people. The worst image is skinny, hungry polar bears. The book is very educational. Sea-level rise is explained. Carbon and energy is discussed. Solar power is shown and described. And it's all done in a very enjoyable way.
In summary, the book is fun. It is a pleasure to read. Children will learn a lot and enjoy doing it. I can't recommend Pole to Pole highly enough. It should be purchased for all kids, and even adults too.

Fantastically enjoyable graphic novel with an eco-conscious theme - educational and thought-provoking for children and adults alike.
Having a special interest in reading material aimed at kids; both as a parent and as a children's author, I was intrigued to be asked to review a pre-release copy of this graphic novel. Together as a family, we have enjoyed looking at well known titles including Asterix and Maus at bedtime recently, and so I understand a little about what engages young minds in terms of the genre.
I am delighted to say that Pole to Pole, Book 4 in the Captain Polo series, is every bit as enjoyable as other contemporary and classic graphic novels and, in my view, is an essential story to share with youngsters.
I really liked that the easy to follow storyline created excitement and suspense, whilst also introducing the proper terminology from time time around climate change (words highlighted are found in a handy glossary at the back), along with some very interesting facts to back up the storyline just to show us that all these things are actually happening in real life.
I would highly recommend this graphic novel, I can't emphasise enough how important reads like this can be in educating our children. I must confess, I also learnt an awful lot when I read it too. I'm now off to purchase books 1-3! Happy reading!!
