The Art of Being a Writer: An Informal Guide to Writing & Living a Writer's Life
JAMES BUCHANAN, author
The Art of Being a Writer is what I've learned over a twenty-five year ghostwriting career shared with you. No BS, no deep or self-involved navel gazing. Just really good ideas and concepts succinctly presented and described to help you be a better writer and achieve your literary goals.
Written in bite-sized chapters of condensed writer's advice The Art of Being a Writer will help you:
1. Understand what makes good writing hard.
2. Access your subconscious--harvest your blinks--where our deepest thinking occurs behind the scenes.
3. Recognize that each word of dialogue rings true when you know your characters agendas and goals.
4. See that a lot of online writing rules and advice are shallow, self-serving, or wrong.
5. Find meaning in your art (because you are an artist).
6. Believe that great storytelling and writing begins with theme and structure.
7. Draft taut sentences.
8. Write characters that ring true in their depth and complexity.
9. How the concept Theory of the Mind can help you make sure your readers see and feel what you want them to see and feel.
10. Then how to create strong queries and book proposals, and not worry so much about the size of your platform.
And there's so much more that I wish I'd had when I first started writing more than twenty-five years ago. Nonetheless, today I've written and published more than two dozen books and won multiple awards for my work ghostwriting memoir, creative nonfiction, and thought leadership books.
Throughout my career, the pressures of tight deadlines, competing priorities, and just living a life meant I had to learn how to quickly create a book-length concept, fill it with compelling characters, draft dialogue that rings true, and craft scenes that capture the reader's thoughts and imagination. Success is when the reader's eyes float through the text and they lose the sensation of reading. I can help you achieve that.
