I really enjoyed this book. The characters are human and real. The story, which bounces from the past to the present and back, reads very well. The flashbacks aren’t distractions—they add to the experience. Tom Clancy and Robert Ludlum would have been proud if it had been their work. Nice job, Bruce!
I have always enjoyed speculative fiction. This book incorporates historical elements, present day environments, and future-potential military technology. The author deftly takes you on a trip chaperoned by entertaining characters as they follow a storyline that results in a satisfying conclusion. I personally enjoyed each twist and t urn along the way. I have the next book on order
The Hope of the South falls into the historical fiction and contemporary action sub-genres and this engaging adventure was penned by author Bruce Thomas. Interweaving mysterious plot threads from past and present, much of the action concerns the end of the American Civil War, and a group of defeated fighters from the South who intend to hide their spoils before the end of the war reaches them. In the modern day, the Special Projects Unit finds a threat addressed to the President from more than a hundred years ago, sparking a captivating hunt for clues from the past as to the terrorism threats of the present day.
Author Bruce Thomas has created a superb action novel that layers in thriller elements, historical atmosphere, an engaging mystery, and powerful suspense to create a fully satisfying reading experience. In the interweaving of past and present, there’s a sharp textual distinction between the narration of the modern day SPU with their clean lines and cool style and the wording of the Civil War times and its hard-edged historical tone. What results is a superb and rich experience and one which has been well crafted by an author who understands both modern tensions and those enduring dark parts of human nature that are always with us, and always threaten our freedoms. Overall, I would certainly recommend The Hope of the South as an action-packed read suitable for fans of treasure hunt mysteries, political thrills, and everything that lies in between. A highly accomplished read.
