Steven Donahue has written an excellent story of a family risking their lives to find freedom in Where Freedom Rings: A Tale of the Underground Railroad. Around every corner is a new trial or fear, which kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next and if Kelsa and her family would make it to the North. Kelsa was a strong female character who loved her family, and although afraid, she risked her life to speak up for others. I quickly fell in love with her. The story was full of action, but it also showed the emotional nightmare that came with escaping slavery, such as the fear of getting caught, which made it easy to identify with the characters and their plight. I think the author did a great job of telling a tale of the harshness of slavery, the intense desire for freedom, and the obstacles that slaves faced in trying to attain their freedom. I loved this story and highly recommend reading it.
