Author and artist John Hopkins’ curiosity for what lies beyond common knowledge shapes his creative and thought-provoking storytelling. In 2014, John diverted from his successful art career of over 25 years to rekindle a hodge-podge assemblage of nascent comics, characters, and story ideas into Lost Cactus, a classic, three-panel comic strip featuring a genetically created cast of characters causing trouble on a secret desert research base—think M*A*S*H meets the X-Files. Published in two anthologies, the indie strip’s quick wit, fearless lampoonery, and supernatural mythology proved a hit at comic cons, achieving a modest following.
Realizing the full potential of his uniquely creative world-building, John drew upon a series of short stories written for his anthologies, expanding the overarching theme of humankind’s ultimate place in a crowded universe into action-adventure science fiction novels, starting with The Golden Ellipse, followed by The Lost Ship, and The Blue Spark, encompassing over 443,000 words and 1636 pages of The Powers That Be trilogy.
A shared universe of Lost Cactus and The Powers That Be sci-fi action-adventure content featuring John’s eclectic human and non-human cast in graphic novels and fascinating sequels to the PTB trilogy are in the works.
Stay tuned and keep an eye on the sky.
